Mission: Episode 2 - Echoes Of An Empire
Location: Medical

ON:

Mel knew it was a long shot but the Merlin staff had managed to rescue some of the programming from her old EMH. And she had become rather fond of him, so she had a requested a job to see if anyone in Engineering might be able to restore him.

Sickbay was quiet, which considering what had gone down in the attack was a nice thing right now. "Please stat ..... natur .... of the medic ..... emergency ....."

"Hey Russ," she said fondly to the holographic humanoid form. "We are going to try help you ..."

The doors to the sickbay opened, but only mostly. The engineer scanned the door first and then pushed them open all the way. The chief walked and looked around, medical seemed like it had fared pretty well all considering. Turning the corner he saw a flicking EMH program in front of who he guessed was the doctor.

"Ma'am, heard there was some engineering issues down here that need to be looked after, but, I think I can see one of them already." Stoun looked at the hologram and then turned back to the Lieutenant. "Senior Chief Petty Officer Stoun at your disposal, how may I help.

"Maam," Mel said. "Maam." Repeating it didn't make it sit any better. "Am I really that old?" she asked.

"You are biologically 46 ...."

"Actually I'm technically over 600 if you factor in prior hosts," she cut off the hologram. She supposed yes she really was a "maam" now. Hopefully too many people wouldn't address her that way though.

"Thank you for coming Petty Officer. Russ here. He suffered some damage and I was hoping there was a glimmer of possibility we could get him patched up," she explained. She wasn't sure if at was the correct language in Engineering terms. It certainly worked in her field though.

"Sorry, formalities and all, Lieutenant. Ma'am usually is first option when reporting to a new crew. He tried to smile, though didn't want to make it any more awkward." He eyed the flickering doctor. "I'm sure we can figure out the EMH here." The chief opened up his kit and produced a tricorder.

"Computer, run a level three diagnostic on the medbay holoemitters." He looked towards the Doctor and back towards the EMH. "We'll get the jitter fixed first and then we can dive into the subroutines. With any luck, there should be a timestamped backup in the core that we can reintegrate in."

He eyed the EMH as he held the tricorder and scanned "How are you doing? Anything you notice wrong with your program?"

"I keep loosing solidity when holding items," Russ replied.

"I had to turn him off during ...." Mel didn't finish the sentence. Anyone who had survived that attack knew the answer. "As tricorders, hypo sprays they were dropping right through him at points. I tried to keep him for consult only but then he started missing words too."

"With the beating the ship got, I'm surprised that you held together at all." Stoun moved around the hologram, trying to deduce the cause of the programs errors. "Any problems before the attack? Anything out of the ordinary?"

"Well he seemed to forget some facts too at times like his link to the computer fried," Mel said.

"Medical bay sensors are out of alignment by 100 microns." The chief looked at the tricorder and made some adjustments. "That should take care of the holding things issue." He handed the EMH the tricorder. "Let's do a drop test, see if you can hold that now."

"Yes Chief, let me scan you with this tricorder," Russ said walking to a drawer and pulling one out. He waved it over the older man.

"So far so good," Mel commented after a minute or so or nothing dropping through her EMH's hands.

"Indeed Doctor and I am afraid some slightly bad news for yourself sir. Your showing some higher levels of triglycerides. May I suggest you lay off the sugar, complex carbs and alcohol to help bring them back in check," Russ told him.

Mel chewed her lip. "Maybe his beside manner took a hit," she said trying not to giggle internally.

Jon tried not to scowl at the EMH. "Who is the patient here?" he paused for a moment as he thought about what the EMH said and sighed. "I'll make sure to schedule my yearly physical. Let's get back to the task at hand" He continued to scan the doctor. "Pathways to the database don't seem terrible though there is corruption" He looked at the EMH,"I don't know, umm, what is the preferred treatment for Zero G sickness?"

"There are several anti nausea drugs some of which need to be avoided for certain races. Hyzeroc 7 seems to be the most adaptable across all species ...." Russ started to reel off.

"He's correct," Mel nodded. "You can't give Randicinan to Klingons, Cloxitimu to Romulans, ,Illistia to Vulcans ... the list goes on but Hyzeroc 7 does seem to work across the spectrum of most species. Also I still recommend chewing on some fresh ginger for Nausea in general. Never underestimate an old herbal remedy."

Stoun listened to the answers and watched as the tricorder mapped the programs. "I also see some degradation in the short and long term memory modules. Probably lost consensus when the core was down for so long." He turned to face both of the doctors. "I can get a team to work on the long term memory as the computer core is being serviced, I'll have them upgrade the memory modules and back it up from the last known uplink before the attack, should make accessing data and diagnostic faster in the long run." He tapped a few things on to a PADD. "In the mean time, I can service your short term memory and see if I can realign the data connections. If I'm not mistaken they keep those cores near the back of the biobeds there should take me about five minutes to swap them out."

The Chief motioned over towards the rear of sickbay and then down to his bag of tools. "I brought some new ones with me, should solve a lot of problems temporarily I'm figuring. Doctor if I could have your assistance? This usually requires me to pull a panel and crawl halfway in, it is usually easier with two people."

"No problem chief," Mel said standing up and going to join him. "You just tell me what to do when."

Jon looked at the EMH. "Please stay here, start reciting Gray's anatomy or something, make sure I'm not tweaking the wrong thing." The engineer headed over to the biobeds and saw the access panel next to biobed 1 on the floor next to the wall. "Alright, let pull this panel and then we'll see what it looks like. Either the gel pack is fried or perhaps some of the isoliner chips. Ever worked on or looked at these before?"

"I can't say I have had that pleasure actually," Mel told the chief.

Jon coxed the panel off the wall and looked at the cavity. The chips were lit up, but the gel pack had exploded into a blue, gooey mess all over the access panel. "There's your problem." He pointed at the broken bag hanging from the data terminal.

"Oh ... oh my that doesn't look good," the Trill said eyes wide. Now they had the panel open and were closer to it, it was giving off a unique smell as well. Or at least to her senses. Maybe being an engineer Stoun had built up some immunity there.

"Is it an easy fix?" she asked him.

"It is, these are pretty much plug and play, and this was an older bag, they've been rolling out a newer version across the fleet so time for an upgrade. Your EMH is going to see about a three fold upgrade in computational decision making." Stoun dug around in the bag for some absorption rags and a micro phaser tool, he got back down on the floor and then leaned into the hatch, the gel had gotten everywhere and over everything in the hatch. He mopped up as much as he could and then used the phaser to burn up the rest. "Almost nothing worse than the smell of burning gel back." He called from the hole.

"Actually there's worse smells," Mel commented. She didn't say out loud but the smell of burning flesh was definitely one up there. And certain alien secretions.

"Yeah, fish right out of the replicator, few other terrible things too." Jon's eyes spied the broken pieces. "Alright doctor, if I could have your assistance. In my bag there is a green wrench, and then a containment bag with the new gelpack, would you be so kind to hand both of those to me? You don't have to be to ginger with the pack, they are pretty sturdy, I'm guessing that this one got hit with a power surge, I'll do a diagnostic on it when I get back to engineering to let you know what happened."

"No problem," Mel said going to the get the requested tools. "Its refreshing not calling for the instruments for a change," she commented. Normally it was her asking for x. "Here you go chief."

Jon grabbed the tool and the bag. "Thank you, I appreciate it. If you could keep an eye on the EMH and just make sure he is doing ok, I can get this knocked out pretty quickly I think. " The engineer went to work repairing and replacing the gel bag and recalibrating it with the current systems.

"Thank you," Mel bowed slightly at him. "Come on Russ. Help me to stock take these drugs. We have a sickbay to put back together."

It took Jon a few minutes to get everything put back together. Running a tricorder across the interchange showed everything was within tolerances. He pulled himself up from the ground and looked towards the doctor, brushing himself off in the process.. "Should be all complete, he may need a bit to recalibrate, I just essentially took him from being able to do Algebra and a crossword to being able to to Trig and Spatial Geometry and Juggling 3 Phasers a the same time." Jon walked over the EMH. "How do you feel?"

"I am functioning in appropriate levels," the hologramme responded.

"He really does have a way with words," Mel laughed. "I need to work with you to get his personality expanded into something a little more bed side friendly. I started but ... well yes ..." her words trailed off.

"Well, we can see what kind of modules are are there that we can install." Jon let out smile. "I mean, I've been with some doctors who think that the less time you spend near them is treatment in itself, so maybe he's working as intended. Is there anything else I can do for you Doctor?." He looked towards the EMH and then back towards Melanie. "And I'll make sure to get that checkup scheduled."

"No thank you Chief. I'm glad to have him fixed. And yes do get that check-up diarised," she stood up to let him take his leave.

"You're welcome. If you have time later, I'd love to sit down and just chat, I'm trying to get to know everyone a little bit better. He went back over and packed up his gear. "I mean, once you aren't busy that is. I know we are all trying to get ready to get moving." Jon grabbed the box and headed towards the door. "It was nice to meet you, let me know if there is anything else I can do!"

"Nice to meet you too chief and no that's perfect thank you. If I think of anything else I will definitely get in touch.
