ON

The Office doors parted as Keiben approached knowing that the news he had would make one of his officers a very happy man. "Peter, some good news. Your first staff member is arriving on the next transport. Command has just informed me... I will accompany you to greet her!"

The Captain looked at a Junior officer at the Engineering console and motioned for her to assume command of Ops while the two ranking officers went to meet the new arrival.

"That is good news sir," Peter answered, as brightly as was possible for him, while on duty.

The pair boarded the turbolift and it was soon gathering speed as it descended the central core and then changed direction to travel through a transfer bridge to docking port six.
"She is all that Command had available but she only graduated the Academy six months ago!"

"Well then, we have all the opportunity to mold her into an excellent officer," the counselor-slash diplomatic officer said as they approached the docking port. "And, even we had to start somewhere, when we were fresh out of the academy, did we not? And what better place than a soon-to-be busy space station?"

Alena looked around as the transport docked at the station. It was a bit overwhelming, but she was also excited. She knew that hard work was ahead, but she was prepared to prove herself. It was going to be interesting to start her new life here. All she had known was Brazil and the town in the States, and of course, the Academy.
The town, a small community, hadn't been her favorite place to be. They had been not so friendly to non-humans. And when they had realized that Alena was part betazoid, they hadn't been very welcoming.
She sighed and pushed the thoughts of the past away. It was in the past, and it ought to stay there. There was an announcement that they were docked in a few minutes. She went to the exit area and waited.

Instantly the Betazoid Captain could sense the fresh new officer at a distance, he could also sense her telepathic... or was it Empathic abilities so he assumed she was Betazoid in part at the very least.
"Ensign Alessa... I'm Captain Keiben Haistro and this is Commander Peter Horn. Welcome to Deep Space Twenty One!"

"Ensign," Peter acknowledged, "welcome aboard. I understand you recently graduated in the art of diplomacy?"

Thank you for your welcome, Captain, Commander", Alena said with a smile. "And yes, I graduated 6 months ago with a major in diplomacy", she looked around, feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sheer size of the space station. "I'm looking forward to working here", she told the 2 men in front of her.

"And we are glad to have you, ensign," the counselor answered, "I can use all the people I can get. Tell me, what did you major in, in regards to diplomacy? What is your intended area of expertise?"

Alena smiled. "I did some research when I started at the Academy, and decided to work with intergalactic relations. It has been interesting to study different species, their cultures,
and of course the political relations with one another", she told the 2 men in front of her. "I hope to help in that area, as sometimes, people, or species, butt heads", she added with a smile.

Peter cast Keiben a sideways glance and chuckled. "That they do," he agreed with a small smile. "And communication is a key in solving disputes, is it not? Did you also study any languages or specific cultures?"

Keiben smiled remembering when he had been so young and unjaded. Part of him wanted to protect her innocence but he knew that inevitability of reality was.

Alena shook her head. "I took a brief look at everything. I decided that I want to broaden my experience by not focusing on only a select few species or languages. I guess you could call me the type who'd like to learn everything", she said with a smile.

"A generalist we call it Ensign," the lean framed Betazoid said, gently probing her with his own Betazoid senses to see how powerful she was. "It looks as though we will be a very busy port once we are officially online and Commander Horn here will be your direct superior officer!"

Alena nodded her understanding. "I'm looking forward to start working", she said with a smile as she felt a slight presence in her mind. Though she was part Betazoid, she hadn't had much training in her abilities, apart from a few classes and experimenting on her own. Hopefully, she could find someone on the space station who could give her some exercises, or further training. She usually picked up on strong emotions without problems, but she had some trouble separating other people's feelings from her own. Whenever she felt irritated or upset, she thought of her Mama's saying: "It's not how you feel. It's how you deal that matters". It had calmed her often, keeping her from making rash decisions, or snapping at people for no reason. Looking around, Alena asked: "Where should I start? I guess it would be wise to get a security check. Or do you have anything I need to do first, Captain? Commander?", she asked.

"How about Commander Horn gets you settled in quarters first, report to Sickbay for your initial physical exam, and then report to Commander Holt in Ops for Orientation... Some of these Cardassian systems take a bit of getting used to!"
Keiben said struggling to hold back his amusement at how eager she was.
'Ah, to be young again' the stray thoughts went through his mind before clamping down on it just in case she was strong enough to read another mind. "I will leave you two to get acquainted!"

The Captain nodded at both before turning and walking from the docking part and through into the nearest corridor and away from the pair.

"Do not be put off by his towering presence," Peter chuckled as he beckoned for her to follow. "You will have quarters for yourself, which you can decorate to your own liking. There is a wide variety of shops available on the promenade that could provide you with some ideas and suggestions." Fortunately, it wasn't very far towards her assigned personal space, especially not with the fast turbolift ride that was available to them. "If you need anything, do not hesitate to page me. If I am needed, I will be in the counseling offices."

"Thank you very much, Sir", Alena said with a wide smile. "Just show me the way and I'll follow. It might take me some time to learn to find my way around. I've never been to a place this big before". She grinned inwardly, remembering how hard she had had it with just finding her way around campus at the Academy. Ah well, she would learn. She always did.

"I am certain the computer will tell you where to go," Peter smiled at her, "for now, take some time to settle in, then report to the infirmary."

"Thank you very much, sir. I will do so", she said, grateful for the help she had received.

Peter nodded, then walked off to leave her to the rest of her day.
